Home Tours Treks Salkantay trek to Machu Picchu

This great tour runs along the sacred Salkantay mountain (6.271m), one of the highest and most impressive mountains in the Peruvian Andes, you pass Quechua communities and less-known Inca ruins, to finally reach Aguas Calientes on the third day. The impressive Sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu is visited on the last day of the program. This route is an interesting alternative to the Inca Trail to Machu Picchu.
Duration: 4 days / 3 nights
Destination: Cusco, Salkantay Trail & Machu Picchu

Day 1: Cusco - Huayracmachay
We leave Cusco at 5:00 with private transport to the start of the trek and Cruz Pata. On our way we visit the interesting Inca site of Tarawasi, where the Incas were offering to Mother Earth. When we arrive in Pata Cruz (2800m), we will meet our wrangler and horses and have lunch. We begin our walk to Soraypampa, a relatively easy path around the foot of the Salkantay mountain. We will begin to rise towards Huayracmachay (4200m), where we will spend the night camping on the coldest point of the trip because of the height (you need warm clothes). All meals are included.

Day 2: Huayracmachay - La Playa
We leave the campground and climb to the pass of Salkantay (4525m), the highest point of our route. Here you have beautiful views of the mountains and glaciers, and we can see condors and chinchillas. From here we descend through a subtropical area to Collpapampa, where we can bathe in the thermal baths before going to La Playa, where we will stay the night. All meals are included.

Day 3: La Playa - Aguas Calientes
This morning we leave the campground and continue the route on a relatively easy path through the impressive gorge of the Urubamba River, where we will observe a variety of birds and flora. After lunch we will pass the Machu Picchu hydroelectric station and we continue following the course of the river, where we hopefully see torrent ducks and even river otters. We will then visit the waterfall of Mandor, before we finally arrive in Puente Ruinas, where we will stay the night. All meals are included.

Day 4: Machu Picchu - Cusco
Breakfast at the hostel. This morning we get up at 5:00 for taking the bus to the ruins of the Machu Picchu citadel, where we can enjoy a beautiful sunrise. We will have a guided tour of approximately 2 hours in Machu Picchu, after which you have time to explore the park yourself or even climb the famous mountain Huayna Picchu or visit the Inca bridge. Finally, at mid-afternoon we return to the village of Aguas Calientes for the return train to Cusco. Transfer to your hotel. No meals included.
